RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR (dir: Chris Gorak, R) - Kurt says, "Listed as an APOCALYPTIC THRILLER, RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR stresses you out. After watching almost every ZOMBIE movie available it’s hard to not expect some ravenous monsters to come out of the mix of dirty bombs being dropped across L.A. In fact the only monster in this closet is the trials of a young married couple as one of them is 'infected' and locked out of their sealed off home. It does make you wonder if you’d let a loved one in to your home while the only source of information, in this case the radio, is telling you to absolutely have no contact with anyone in a certain radius of the drop zone. I'd do it. I’d let Becca in in a heart beat…she made that very clear to me while we watched this. Worth watching, and totally creepy."
FIREWORKS WEDNESDAY (dir: Asghar Farhadi, Not Rated) - Bart says, "Every Friday we get a big box of 15-20 new movies to put out on the shelf for rent on Tuesday. Sometimes the box is full of movies I've been waiting months to see and I'm overwhelmed by having to watch them all within the next few days. Other times the box is full of nothing but Hollywood garbage and indie/foreign productions nobody's seen because they were never released theatrically in this country. On these occasions I take a chance and watch some of these movies I've never heard of in an attempt to find a 'Pick of the Week.' The greatest treasure I've discovered this way is definitely this small-scale Iranian film about a recently engaged girl who's unwillingly drawn into the marital difficulties of a bourgeois couple whose house she's cleaning. It's got everything that excited the world about Iranian cinema in the mid-90s - a richly detailed, realistic story, with engaging characters, social commentary, and a touch of cynicism, but an ultimate optimism that leaves you feeling pretty good about the world."
A SCANNER DARKLY (dir: Richard Linklater, R) - Thom says, "While we may never have a truly great adaptation of any of Philip K. Dick’s writings, Richard Linklater’s A SCANNER DARKLY comes the closest (I’m talking to you, BLADE RUNNER fans). Embrace the fact that Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey, Jr., and Wynona Ryder all star in this film; they play the stereotypes of themselves that you so know and love/hate. Perhaps these stereotypes only act to heighten the intrinsically flawed nature and fidelity of the film…either way, SCANNER has the same hand-drawn-animation-over-filmed-footage that Linklater’s WAKING LIFE had. So that’s cool. Plus, SCANNER tells you how the government is evil and out to get us and that we’re pretty evil too, so now what? Can I get an 'Amen?'"
OLD JOY (dir: Kelly Reichardt, Not Rated) - Thom says, "Director Kelly Reichardt(mastermind of last year’s wonderful WENDY AND LUCY)’s second film is the story of two long-time friends, disconnected by lifestyle, who go on a trip to the Bagby Hot Springs. Mark (Daniel London) is recently married with a decent job and a unexpected baby on the way. Kurt (the always-amazing Will Oldham) gets mystical travelling to places like Big Sur and believes that he has String Theory down pat. OLD JOY takes its time, more of a mood-movie than WENDY AND LUCY; it is sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and always right on-key. Watch it with a friend. OLD JOY is also notable for the first appearance of Lucy (still playing a dog)."
