JOHNNY SUEDE (dir: Tom DiCillo, R) - Bart says, "Everybody's always shocked when the new Brad Pitt movie comes out and it turns out he can act - and even more surprised when he's funny. Dude's hilarious! Just watch him in this, his first real starring role, which came out the same year everybody noticed him in THELMA AND LOUISE. In it he plays a not-so-bright wanna-be rock star who finds a cool pair of shoes which inspire a series of wacky encounters with oddball New York types played by Catherine Keener, Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Cave, Ginger from Gilligan's Island, etc. Tom DiCillo, the film's auteur, is most famous for his behind-the-scenes indie comedy LIVING IN OBLIVION, but I prefer this, his debut feature, and am still waiting for him to make another one as good - though last year's DELIRIOUS with Steve Buscemi wasn't bad."
L.A. STORY (dir: Mick Jackson, PG-13) – Kurt says, “During Steven Martin’s off time he can be found elegantly walking the beach strumming his banjo with three dogs circling his feet. What a THE JERK! LA STORY has stuck with me since the first time I watched it, making it a timeless favorite of mine. Everything else about this movie is NOT timeless; it is in fact rather plucked from an 80s bouquet and left out to be pressed into the scrapbook of time as ‘an early nineties movie.’ Regardless, the romantic elements and juxtaposition of city life make it easily relatable."
