MON ONCLE (dir: Jacques Tati, Not Rated) - Bart says, "There'd be no MR. BEAN without the films of Jacques Tati and his awkward on-screen alter-ego Monsieur Hulot. Only Tati's films aren't so much about the over-the-top slapstick pratfalls, as they are about subtle visual humor and elaborately set-up gags where you might miss the punchline if you're not watching closely. His almost dialogue-free films are a cinephile's delight because there's something funny in every frame, and with each viewing you discover new jokes. This, his second M. Hulot film, about the terrors of modern (circa 1958) technology, might be my favorite - not as dense and rewarding as PLAYTIME, but you still have to do some work for your laughs."
BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET (dir: Mario Monicelli, Not Rated) - Bart says, "Everybody loves a good heist movie, and this spoof of RIFIFI is one for sure. I actually prefer it to RIFIFI, not just because it's really funny, but because the characters are all engaging and lovable and bungle everything and when they don't know what to do just act really Italian."
THE BIG COUNTRY (dir: William Wyler, Not Rated)
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (dir: Richard Brooks, Not Rated)
THE DEFIANT ONES (dir: Stanley Kramer, Not Rated)
KING CREOLE (dir: Michael Curtiz, Not Rated)
LOOK BACK IN ANGER (dir: Tony Richardson, Not Rated)
THE LOVERS (dir: Louis Malle, Not Rated)
TOUCH OF EVIL (dir: Orson Welles, Not Rated)
VERTIGO (dir: Alfred Hitchcock, Not Rated)
