PEYTON PLACE (dir: Mark Robson, Not Rated) - Bart says, "This glorious soap opera has only one thing on its mind and that's S-E-X. Except it's from the Fifties, so the filmmakers had to come up with ingenious ways to discuss such filthy subjects as adultery, abortion, rape, incest, and pre-marital lovemaking without ever actually referring to them by name. That's the problem with movies today - the only taboos left are things so horrifically shocking that none of us will ever actually experience them in our lifetimes. All the mystery and danger and excitement of everyday life has been destroyed by a cinema of permissiveness where there's nothing that can't be shown or talked about. On another note: check out all the still-recognizable Maine locations in this film! Belfast and Camden have hardly changed in the past 50 years."
THE CRANES ARE FLYING (dir: Mikhail Kalatozov, Not Rated) Bart says, "Ive got two approaches for trying to convince you to watch this movie that I think every single person on the planet should see. I could tell you about the gorgeous cinematography and how it rivals this directors other major film, I AM CUBA, as the most stunningly photographed black and white film of all time. Or I could emphasize the emotional wallop of the simple story of two ill-fated young lovers on the eve of World War II and hope that youre a sucker for tragic romances like I am. Either way, I guarantee youll fall in love with this post-Stalin Soviet masterpiece."
