THE RED BALLOON (dir: Albert Lamorisse, Not Rated) - Michelle says, "Someone must’ve interrupted our regular classroom schedule to show us this movie in grade school; I have positive associations with it. If you weren’t so lucky or it’s just been a while, watch this allegorical short for its color and its simple story of childhood friendship and autonomy from mean boys, school masters, and church wardens, as personified by something so round and effervescent that we immediately covet it. Featuring his own son as the balloon’s counterpart, director Albert Lamorisse captures gorgeous pre-modernized Paris, filmed to emphasize its cobblestones and narrow alleyways. The look of the film is clearly dated, but that, along with its slight narrative and visual iconography, is really its appeal."
CRAZED FRUIT (dir: Kô Nakahira, Not Rated) – Bart says, "The title refers to the juicy Japanese youngsters who let their emotions run wild in this outrageously over-the-top melodrama that never made it to the States at the time due to its highly immoral content (by 50s standards). It's the old "two brothers in love with the same girl" story, but carried to the extreme within its realistically portrayed context of the debauched lives of bored, rich teenagers by the seaside sleeping around and drinking and fighting and sailing their way into oblivion."
