THE
NAKED CITY (dir: Jules
Dassin, Not Rated) - Bart says, "If you don't care anything
about New York City, then this movie will seem like a pretty good,
if overly narrated, film noir to you. But if the Big Apple holds any
kind of fascination for you at all, then this this movie will be a
revelation. The first Hollywood studio picture ever shot entirely on
location in NYC, it captures the Manhattan of 60+ years ago, most
notably the Lower East Side, like you've never seen it in the movies.
The story, which involves the murder of a model and its possible
link to a series of jewel heists, claims to be one that could take
place in no other city. While this might not be entirely true, New
York is far and away the main character of the film, much more so
than the police lieutenant played by Barry Fitzgerald or any of his
investigators. Ignore the sometimes awkward dubbing due to the
difficulties of location sound recording at the time, and be sure to
stick around for the stunning climactic chase scene on the
Williamsburg Bridge." |

THE
TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (dir: John Huston, Not Rated) -
Bart says, "You probably know it as that movie that made famous
the line 'We don't need no stinking badges!' (even though that's not
really what the bandit says), but no matter who you are you owe it
to yourself to finally see this old black & white classic that's
in that league of great movies that are so well-scripted and tightly-constructed
and beautifully performed that it will never seem dated. I can't
think of a more cynical examination of human nature than this
tale of three American gold prospectors in Mexico whose troubles
don't start until AFTER they've hit the motherlode and need to trust
each other enough to get the gold back to town. Bogie seethes with
paranoia in his best scoundrel role until Queeg in THE CAINE MUTINY
and Walter Huston, the director's father, gives the performance of
his career that justly won him an Oscar that year." |

THE
FALLEN IDOL (dir: Carol
Reed, Not Rated) - Bart says, "The year before Carol Reed made
THE THIRD MAN, he directed this Grahame Greene-penned semi-thriller about a boy who,
when his best friend - the butler at the embassy
where he lives - is falsely accused of murder, can't understand why telling the truth might not be
the best way to help. Now, I'm not about
to say that this absorbing indictment of the hypocrisy of adults is
the better of the two Reed-Greene films, but here's a case where you
discover a perfect little gem of a movie that seems so much more
fresh and exciting than that stale old 'classic' you've
seen a million times. So watch 'em both." |
