DUCK SOUP (dir: Leo McCarey, Not Rated) - Michelle says, "When I saw this initially, I told Bart that I didn’t get it; what was so funny about this movie? 'That hurts me,' he said, sadly shaking his head. So twice more I watched this political satire about government, anarchy, diplomacy, and war. And I started to like the ridiculous slapstick of Harpo, Chico, and whoever happens to be the hapless victim of their shenanigans. And then I realized that the mirror scene – Harpo’s ultimate prank on Groucho – is not merely amusing: it’s a genius achievement in timing and visual humor, topped only perhaps by the cumulative effect of Chico and Groucho’s relentless punning throughout the entire feature. So do like me and watch it at least three times. Bart will be proud of you."
FOOTLIGHT PARADE (dir: Lloyd Bacon, Not Rated) - Bart says, "42ND STREET is usually considered the undisputed champion of Depression Era musicals, but I actually have a preference for the same director's follow-up of the same year. Jimmy Cagney is fun in the 'The Show Must Go On' producer role, especially when he gets to sing and dance, but the highlight of the film is the concluding sequence of three of genius choreographer Busby Berkeley's most impressive numbers, each one more impossible and insane than the last."
