NEW MOVIES!  JANUARY 5 - JANUARY 12, 2010

AARON… ALBEIT A SEX HERO (dir: Paul Bright, Not Rated) – A young man experiences a terrible last day on the job in this indie comedy from Austin, Texas. Aside from being attacked by a rattlesnake and scorpion, he also must contend with a bus full of old ladies with blue hair and too much perfume.

ADAM (dir: Max Mayer, PG-13) – Hugh Dancy, so charming in SAVAGE GRACE, plays an unusual young man drawn out of his shell by Rose Byrne, his attractive new neighbor. With a very special appearance by PERFECT STRANGERS star Mark Linn-Baker.

BIG LOVE: SEASON 3 (dir: Mark V. Olsen / Will Scheffer , Not Rated) – It’s time to gather your sister wives and watch another season of America’s favorite polygamist drama!
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (dir: Phil Lord / Chris Miller, PG) – I’m thinking this CGI animated film might be a cut above the rest since the list of vocal talent includes Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Bruce Campbell and Mr. T.

50 DEAD MEN WALKING (dir: Kari Skogland, R) – Jim Sturgess from ACROSS THE UNIVERSE stars as a young dirtbag in Belfast, Northern Ireland who gets recruited by British agents to infiltrate the IRA. When other informants start turning up dead he tries to bag it, but Ben Kingsley, as the shady government contact, has other ideas for him. Based on a true story.

THE FINAL DESTINATION (dir: David R. Ellis, R) – Whoa. Inspiration has struck. Starting next week this newsletter will also be available in a 3-D version. If lame horror franchises can do it, we can too.
HALF-LIFE (dir: Jennifer Phang, Not Rated) – In this striking film from director Jennifer Phang, a brother and sister must deal with their father’s desertion and their mother’s jerky new boyfriend. Partly shot using the rotoscoping animation technique pioneered in WAKING LIFE.

HERB AND DOROTHY (dir: Megumi Sasaki, Not Rated) – This documentary tells the story of a married couple in New York who began collecting the artwork of their friends in the early 1960s. Those friends included people like Andy Warhol so, suffice it to say, Herb and Dorothy are ridiculously rich now but also own one of the most important collections of modern art not found in a museum.

^LORNA'S SILENCE (dir: Jean-Pierre Dardenne / Luc Dardenne, R) – The Dardenne Brothers of Belgium turn in another reliably grim yet utterly human look into the travails of society’s invisible members. A young Albanian woman agrees to a sham marriage to earn money so she and her boyfriend can follow their humble dream of opening a snack bar. This was nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes and won the screenplay award.
MINE (dir: Geralyn Pezanoski, Not Rated) – Film Movement’s first offering of 2010 is an absorbing documentary about New Orleans residents trying to get their pets back after Hurricane Katrina. In many cases, the animals were adopted by people in other states and weren’t too keen on giving them back

*TRUCKER (dir: James Mottern, R) – Michelle Monaghan from GONE BABY GONE impresses as a long-haul lady trucker whose modest interests include one night stands and getting drunk. When the son she barely knows is dumped on her doorstep, her life is turned upside down. If she turns out to be a champion arm wrestler, this movie officially has the same plot as OVER THE TOP with Sylvester Stallone.
