NEW
MOVIES! AUGUST 5 - AUGUST 11, 2008
BEAU BRUMMELL: THIS CHARMING MAN (dir: Philippa
Lowthorpe, Not Rated) – I’d personally rather eat a top hat filled with dust than watch this “rip-roaring” account of some dead guy who changed men’s fashion in England forever. |
CAMP OUT (dir: Larry Grimaldi / Kirk
Marcolina, Not Rated) – This documentary about gay teens at a Christian summer camp is well intentioned and everything but could have really used some JESUS CAMP-style creepiness to spice things up. |
CARMEN
(dir: Vicente Aranda, Unrated) – Paz Vega from SEX & LUCIA steps into the shoes of the lusty gypsy temptress. Bonus points for cutting out the singing. |
^THE COUNTERFEITERS (dir: Stefan
Ruzowitzky, R) – This year’s Academy Award Winner for foreign language film is this fine German thriller that tells the true story of Berlin’s top counterfeiter who, while in a Nazi concentration camp, strikes a deal with his captors to keep Hitler’s vaults full of fake money in exchange for special amenities and privileges. |
THE CURIOSITY OF CHANCE (dir: Russell P.
Marleau, Not Rated) – This homage to ‘80s teen comedies tells the story of a high school misfit doing anything to avoid the cruelty of his classmates. This took the big prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. |
DUCK (dir: Nicole
Bettauer, PG-13) – Set in the Los Angeles of the near future, Phillip Baker Hall plays a destitute man wandering around with a friendly fowl. |
THE KILLING OF JOHN LENNON (dir: Andrew
Piddington, Not Rated) – If you can’t wait for the Mark David Chapman
bio-pic starring Jared Leto coming out later this year, check out this alternate effort which actually got much better reviews. Jared Leto is just a big phony, you know. |
LOVE MY LIFE (dir: Koji Kawano, Not Rated) – Being a cute Japanese lesbian can come with a whole slew of problems. Like your girlfriend is always borrowing your Hello Kitty underwear and stuff like that. |
MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD (dir: Daniele
Luchetti, R) – Two brothers in turbulent 1960s Italy take opposing sides politically which inevitably leads to family strife and a bunch of other stuff before being neatly reconciled when they forge a new understanding of one another blah blah blah. |
NIM'S ISLAND (dir: Jennifer Flackett / Mark Levin, PG) – God, I want to punch this movie in the face. |
*PETE SEEGER: THE POWER OF SONG (dir: Jim Brown, PG) – When compiling your list of coolest dudes ever, don’t forget about Pete
Seeger. The folk singer and activist inspired everyone from Bob Dylan to Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Springsteen and is still kicking it today at age 89. He’s probably even written a few new tunes about our current political climate. |
PHILOSOPHY OF A KNIFE (dir: Andrey
Iskanov, Unrated) – Does the world really need a horrific Russian documentary about WWII atrocities committed by the Japanese with a running time of four-and-a-half hours? |
ROGUE (dir: Greg
Mclean, Unrated) – Sadly, since the death of Steve Irwin, Australia has been overrun with bloodthirsty crocs. Perhaps Michael Vartan and Radha Mitchell can make the waters safe once again. |
WASTED (dir: Matt Oates, R) – It’s THE BIG CHILL for Generation X! If only Gen X was as self-involved as The Baby Boomers, maybe one of us would care. |
