NEW
MOVIES! JUNE 3 - JUNE 9, 2008
AMERICAN CRUDE (dir: Craig
Sheffer, R) – Ron Livingston, Michael Clarke Duncan and Rob Schneider star in this extra-vulgar comedy about an outrageous bachelor party that over the course of the evening evolves into a night to never forget. |
THE ANIMATION SHOW: VOLUME 3 (dir: Dan Schneider, Not Rated) – Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt once again collect the craziest animated shorts around. This one includes a couple from Bill Plympton and a brand new Beavis & Butthead treat. |
^BOARDING GATE (dir: Olivier
Assayas, R) – Asia Argento and Michael Madsen star in this globe-trotting thriller from Olivier
Assayas. She plays an ex-prostitute forced to turn to a life of assassinating people for money. |
CONTROL (dir: Anton
Corbijn, R) – Joy Division’s Ian Curtis gets the bio-pic treatment with this beautifully shot black and white feature from music video director Anton
Corbijn. |
THE EYE (dir: David Moreau / Xavier
Palud, PG-13) – Jessica Alba heads up this remake of The Pang Brothers' far-superior horror classic. She plays a blind woman who, after having a radical surgery, regains more than her vision. |
FLAWLESS (dir: Michael Radford, PG-13) – Demi Moore leaves her semi-retirement behind to star with Michael Caine in this fun diamond heist flick set in
1960s London. |
HOLLYWOOD DREAMS (dir: Henry
Jaglom, R) – Henry Jaglom continues to putter away as the indie Woody Allen, but his latest is getting some of his best reviews in years. It concerns a young woman fresh off the bus from Iowa trying to realize her dreams of stardom in the city of angels. |
MAMA'S BOY (dir: Tim Hamilton, PG-13) – That NAPOLEON DYNAMITE kid stars as a 29-year-old living at home with his mom, Diane
Keaton, and refusing to budge. Hilariously, when she starts dating Jeff Daniels, he does everything he can to sabotage their burgeoning romance. The only possible saving grace here is the presence of the always adorable Anna
Faris. |
MEET THE SPARTANS (dir: Jason Friedberg / Aaron Seltzer,
Unrated) – Remember AIRPLANE! and how funny it was? This is like the opposite of that feeling. |
*THE ONION MOVIE (dir: Tom Kuntz / Mike Maguire,
Unrated) – Now, here’s something funny. America’s favorite news source serves up a KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE for the noughties that skewers everything from race relations to sleazy news channels to over-sexualized teen pop stars. |
PARK (dir:
Kurt Voelker, R) – William Bladwin, Ricki Lake and Cheri Oteri star in this wacky indie set in a Los Angeles public park full of off the wall characters including, but not limited to, an adulterous lawyer, some aspiring nudists and a couple of over-zealous dog
groomers. |
REMEMBER THE DAZE (dir: Jess
Manafort, R) – You know how awesome DAZED & CONFUSED is? This period piece is trying to do for 1999 what that did for 1976. And, against no odds, it fails. |
SEMI-PRO (dir: Kent
Alterman, R) – Maayyybbeee it’s time for Will Ferrell to start trying a little harder |
SHARK SWARM (dir: James A.
Contner, Not Rated) – Kurt says, “The second leading cause of death in America is shark
attacks; the first… train wrecks. Can you comprehend the amount of death and carnage if sharks traveled on the railway system? No, you can’t. That’s why this 163 minute documentary is mind exploding. What if trains had rows of wheels, ready to replace broken or injured wheels on the track? SHARK ATTACK!” |
SURVIVING EDEN (dir: Greg
Pritikin, Not Rated) – Oh great. Another sub-sub-Christopher Guest rip-off. |
TRIGGER MAN (dir: Ti West, Not Rated) – This surprisingly snazzy hybrid of horror movie and wilderness survival is a must-see for one reason only. When was the last time a movie was set in Delaware? |
VINCE VAUGHN'S WILD WEST COMEDY SHOW (dir: Ari
Sandel, R) – This documentary follows Vince Vaughn and a bunch of pals on a cross-country tour as they put on a ramshackle music and comedy revue every night. Friends along for the ride include Dwight
Yoakam, Jon Favreau and Justin Long. |
XXY (dir: Lucia
Puenzo, Not Rated) – Film Movement brings us this stellar coming-of-age tale (with a twist) from Argentina that explores a girl’s dark secret over the course of a summer at the beach. |
