NEW
MOVIES! MAY 27 - JUNE 2, 2008
THE AIR I BREATHE (dir: Jieho Lee, R) – The latest in the annoying post-CRASH boom of fate-core movies where a bunch of name actors take small roles hoping it will lead to ensemble heaven. Tell Kevin Bacon, Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker and Brendan Fraser to quit it. |
ALL HAT (dir: Leonard
Farlinger, R) – Thoroughbred horses! Guns! Romance! All that and more is yours to behold when you rent this breathtaking Western tale nobody has ever heard of. |
^CASSANDRA'S DREAM (dir: Woody Allen, PG-13) – Woody Allen is still hanging out in England, and this time Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor play financially strapped brothers who get a scheme cooking involving some pretty ladies and a sailboat. It’s not quite in the same league as MATCH POINT, but Woody’s winning streak remains intact. |
CLEANER (dir: Renny
Harlin, R) – I’m not quite sure how a movie directed by Renny “Greatest Finnish Person Ever” Harlin and starring the lovely Samuel J. Jackson and the even lovelier Eva Mendes ends up going straight to DVD. But what do I know? I’m just a guy who really loves the films of Renny
Harlin. Watch MINDHUNTERS sometime, it’s tremendous. |
DARFUR NOW (dir: Ted Braun, PG) – Why not Darfur tomorrow? Cause it’s gonna be gone, duh. This Don
Cheadle-produced doc seems really noble but I really don’t think I can handle being subjected to Bono’s theme song. Maybe I’ll just send OxFam a donation instead. |
G. I. JESUS (dir: Carl
Colpaert, R) – A young Mexican man who enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in Iraq as a means to obtain citizenship returns home to his family and realizes, as his post-war demons take over, that it totally wasn’t worth it. |
GRACE IS GONE (dir: James C.
Strouse, PG-13) – John Cusack plays a father and husband coming to terms with his wife’s death in Iraq in this well-intentioned but ultimately dreary slog. |
THE LATHER EFFECT (dir: Sarah Kelly, Not Rated) – A bunch of high school friends in their
30s reunite for a wild weekend and everybody’s totally different but totally the same. Hopefully, the laughs are as plentiful as the awesome 80’s songs on the soundtrack. |
LOST IN BEIJING (dir: Yu Li, Not Rated) – The Chinese censors were so inflamed by the super-sexy content of this drama about four urban socialites that they banned it halfway through its theatrical run. See what all the fuss is about in this film that The New York Times called “Raw, interesting and sexually explicit.” |
MOST HIGH (dir: Marty
Sader, Not Rated) – If you’ve been contemplating the benefits of acquiring a hard-core drug habit, please watch this illuminating cautionary tale. You may think those meth cubes you’ve been stuffing in your crack pipe are harmless, as one would,
but actually they are quite bad for you. |
RAMBO (dir: Sylvester
Stallone,
R) – Kurt says, "Have you seen Tango and Cash? You should! Kurt Russell stars as Cash, the blue collar cop who parallels Sly's yuppie wit. This buddy-cop movie sets a standard for movies with two really cool guys in it. Nobody at home can't say they aren't feeling like going OVERBOARD (that's a great movie with Kurt Russell in it also) about it!!! AND THE LIGHTNING STRIKES IN THE
NI-I-GHT!!!” |
SHELTER (dir: Jonah
Markowitz, R) – If you’re sick of all the surfing movies out there promoting a heterosexual agenda, here’s the world’s first gay-themed flick on the subject. Let the gays surf, I say. |
THE TAKE (dir: Brad Furman, R) – John Leguizamo plays an armored car driver who is forced to take on Tyrese Gibson and his vicious gang of thieves in this exciting thriller that also features the diminutive charms of Rosie Perez. |
TYPHOON (dir:
Kyung-Taek Kwak, R) – A naval officer faces off against a tech-savvy pirate in this exciting high-seas adventure from Korea. |
*THE WALKER (dir: Paul Schrader, R) – Woody Harrelson stars in Paul Schrader’s companion piece to AMERICAN GIGOLO, set against the turbulent backdrop of Washington politics. Oh, and nice
stache, Woody. |
WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY? (dir: Rob
VanAlkemade, PG) – This irreverent documentary follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they tour around the country trying to get people to understand the real meaning of Christmas. Which apparently is not about getting as much loot as possible. |
