NEW MOVIES!  MAY 13 - MAY 19, 2008

BANKING ON HEAVEN (dir: Dot Reidelbach, Not Rated) – While everybody enjoys the adorable polygamists on BIG LOVE, the reality of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints movement is way harsher. This movie about the cult-tastic goings on in Colorado City, Arizona will either freak you out completely or leave you wondering why you don’t have 17 wives and 79 children.
BOTCHED (dir: Kit Ryan, Unrated) – Stephen Dorff stars as a luckless thief in Moscow for a job that quickly goes very, bloodily wrong. Slasherpool.com compares it favorably to SEVERENCE and SHAUN OF THE DEAD, and when has Slasherpool.com ever lead you astray?
FRONTIER(S) (dir: Xavier Gens, Unrated) – Following hot on the heels of HIGH TENSION and INSIDE, this latest addition to the emerging French extreme horror canon is certainly not recommended to viewers who can’t hold their popcorn. It’s a Gallic gorehound extravaganza!
THE GARAGE (dir: Carl Thibault, PG-13) – This 70s-set drama follows a young man as he works as a mechanic for his father and dreams of leaving his small town forever. And apparently, that’s all an instantly forgettable indie movie needs to have going plot-wise.
GRADUATION (dir: Michael Mayer, Not Rated) – When their friend has a financial crisis, four kids decide to pull off the ultimate heist… on the same day as their high-school graduation.
*THE GREAT DEBATERS (dir: Denzel Washington, PG-13) – Denzel Washington directs and stars in this inspiring true-life account of the all-black debate team from Wiley College in rural Texas which in 1935 went to the national championship against Harvard. Luckily, it’s not too squishy.
I REALLY HATE MY JOB (dir: Oliver Parker, Not Rated) – Neve Campbell heads up this British comedy about five bitter co-workers at a restaurant who would rather be pursuing their careers in the arts.
MAD MONEY (dir: Callie Khouri, PG-13) – Do you like to not laugh when you watch a comedy? If so, enjoy this new Diane Keaton crime caper. All others need not apply.
MILITARY INTELLIGENCE AND YOU! (dir: Dale Kutzera, Not Rated) – Remember those funny old army training films from WWII? Apparently somebody thought we needed a feature length spoof of them.
NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ELECTRIC APRICOT: QUEST FOR FESTEROO (dir: Les Claypool, R) – Now jam band culture is something ripe for spoofing. With appearances by Matt Stone, Seth Green and the Flight Of The Conchords dudes, this account of the fictional band Electric Apricot could actually be funny.
NUMB (dir: Harris Goldberg, R) – Your old friend Matthew Perry stars as a dude who, fearing for his sanity, starts therapy but soon learns through a succession of doctors that they’re even nuttier than he is.
A RAISIN IN THE SUN (dir: Kenny Leon, Not Rated) – Remaking a beloved Sidney Poitier film is a gutsy move. Casting Puff Daddy in the Sidney Poitier role is even gutsier. The fact that it turned out pretty darn good is the gutsiest move of all.
SCREAMERS (dir: Carla Garapedian, R) – Leave it to your political rocker friends in System Of A Down to give you an enlightening history of genocide from Armenia to Cambodia all the way up to the present in Darfur. As a bonus, they even throw in some sweet concert footage.
STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME (dir: Michele Ohayon, Not Rated) – This award-winning documentary tells the harrowing story of a Dutch man who, during WWII, manages to end up in the same concentration camp as his wife and his mistress.
STEEL CITY (dir: Brian Jun, R) – Kurt says: “Tired of fast forwarding through commercials while watching your ‘soaps?’ Well stick around for this ‘hopeful’ drama about a father behind bars and the alienation it creates in his family circle. Yeehaw, Baby-love! You’ll go through these ninety-five minutes like they were actually seconds! Be sure to check all the great special features out on this disc!!! SLAM SLAM SLAM DUNK!!!”
UNTRACEABLE (dir: Gregory Hoblit, R) – Diane Lane plays an FBI cyber crime detective tracking an online serial killer. Which means that this movie consists of a lot of furious keystrokes punctuated by lines like, “It’s a phantom IP! We’ll have to go to the mirror site!” NOT A SLAM DUNK. Not even a lame Lebron James lay up.
WALK ALL OVER ME (dir: Robert Cuffley, R) – So far Leelee Sobieski’s career in film has consisted of a lot of bad acting and even more of looking like Helen Hunt’s little sister. This S&M-themed movie does nothing to rectify that situation.
^YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH (dir: Francis Ford Coppola, R) – Francis Ford Coppola directs his first movie in over 10 years! And while he’s not hitting his 1970s stride here, this little gem starring Tim Roth as a man who grows younger as time goes by certainly won’t sully his reputation either.
