NEW MOVIES!  APRIL 29 - MAY 5, 2008

^BAMAKO - (dir: Abderrahmane Sissako, Not Rated) Who’s up for 2 hour courtroom drama from Mali in which lowly farmers and fisherman take on the World Bank? What if we throw in a Danny Glover cameo?
BERKELEY (dir: Bobby Roth, R) - Some baby-boomer director, obviously bummed out about the kids today and their apathetic outlook, decided to make this ode to the days of yore when kids would take to the streets in protest and really change the world, you know?
BERNARD AND DORIS (dir: Bob Balaban, Not Rated) - Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes star as billionaires Doris Duke and her alcoholic, gay butler, Rafferty. You can’t even imagine the shenanigans those two got up to.
DEAD MAN'S BOUNTY (dir: Piotr Uklanski, R) - Have you heard about Pierogi Westerns? In Poland, they riot joyously in the streets whenever a new one is released. This one, featuring Boguslaw Linda and Val Kilmer is where it all started.
*THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (dir: Julian Schnabel, PG-13) - Julian Schnabel got the best reviews of his career with this bio-pic of French magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who, after suffering a stroke, was left paralyzed, only able to blink his left eyelid.
THE GOLDEN COMPASS (dir: Chris Weitz, PG-13) - The scary church people may have successfully convinced kids that seeing this in the theater would be a mortal sin, but now the devil is getting another shot at their young souls. Watch at your own risk. And stay away from that warlock Harry Potter too!
HOW SHE MOVE (dir: Ian Iqbal Rashid, PG-13) - I hate to sound old-fashioned but isn’t the English language confusing enough? Must we really?
MOONDANCE ALEXANDER (dir: Michael Damian, G) - Nearly all little girls love horses. Nearly all horses despise little girls. A funny paradox. In this spectacular new family adventure a horse named Checkers barely manages to contain his equine rage as some little girl rides him around and stuff.
NANKING (dir: Bill Guttentag / Dan Sturman, R) - This documentary about China’s former capital utilizes newly discovered archival materials and the vocal performances of Woody Harrelson and Stephen Dorff to make sure nobody ever forgets that Japan did some messssed-up stuff during their imperialistic days.
NOISE (dir: Matthew Saville, Not Rated) - This highly acclaimed Australian film follows a young constable as he begins to lose his hearing in the aftermath of a shocking murder. Thanks Film Movement!
27 DRESSES (dir: Anne Fletcher, PG-13) - Katherine Heigl takes her post-KNOCKED UP stardom and blows it on this drippy rom-com about an incredibly beautiful, successful woman who’s a total failure at love. Wow, romantic comedies are totally regressive, sexist propaganda. That only just now occurred to me. Yikes. Ed Burns is in this. That’s even worse.
THE WEEKEND (dir: Michael Todd Kuskin, Unrated) - Boooooooo- bbbbeeeeeeeezzzzzz!!!!!!!
