MOVIES! APRIL 15 - APRIL 21, 2008
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM (dir: Colin Strause / Greg
Strause, Unrated) – Predators hate Aliens because of their cool acid blood. Aliens hate Predators because of their cool dreadlocks. It seems until they sort
out their differences, humans will continue to pay the price. |
THE BACKWOODS (dir: Koldo
Serra, R) – Remember the days when Gary Oldman was the coolest dude on Earth? Well, I do and I’m excited for him to have his first
meaty leading role in some time with this creepy Spanish thriller. As an added bonus, B&G faves Paddy Considine and Virginie Ledoyen co-star. |
*BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD (dir: Sidney Lumet, R) –
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke star as two brothers who decide to add to their collective loserdom by trying to rob their parents’ jewelry store. It’s no surprise that things don’t turn out especially well in this
insta-classic from legendary director Sidney
Lumet. |
CRAZY LIKE A FOX (dir: Richard Squires, Not Rated) –
Whoa. It’s Mary McDonnell, a.k.a. Stands With A Fist from DANCES WITH WOLVES. And Roger Rees,
a.k.a. Rebecca’s sexy boss on CHEERS. In this movie, he plays an 8th generation farmer in Virginia who goes a little loco when he is swindled out of his property. |
CRIME FICTION (dir: Will
Slocombe, Not Rated) –
If you and your girlfriend are competing writers and your first book got panned and your agent has dumped you and
your girlfriend's career is heading toward the stratosphere, it might make sense to kill her and then write a bestseller about it. |
THE FINAL SEASON (dir: David M. Evans, PG) –
That hobbit from THE GOONIES coaches a high school baseball team all the way to inspirational pap. |
I WANT SOMEONE TO EAT CHEESE WITH (dir: Jeff
Garlin, Not Rated) –
Jeff Garlin, who you may know as Larry’s agent on CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, wrote, directed and stars in this well-received film about an aging schlub who’s ready to settle down with the right person. After he moves out of his Mom’s. |
IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE (dir: Uwe Boll, PG-13) –
How you jam Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Matthew Lillard and Ron Perlman into the same cheap-o medieval action movie I’ll never know. I don’t question the divine. |
INSIDE (dir: Alexandre Bustillo / Julien Maury, Unrated) –
Maybe you don’t feel like watching JUNO. Maybe you’d rather watch a sadistic French horror film with Beatrice Dalle as a mystery woman willing to do anything, and I do mean anything, to get at a very, very pregnant lady’s baby. |
JUNO (dir: Jason
Reitman, PG-13) –
I’ve heard a lot of guff about this being overrated but I think that’s just indie snobbery because the mall crowds liked it. The backlash against the backlash starts here. |
^KHADAK (dir: Peter Brosens / Jessica Hope Woodworth, Not Rated) –
I’m always excited when we get a film from Mongolia. I don’t know why. It just seems like getting a movie from outer space. Anyway, this Mongolian film features a nomadic farmer who’s forced to take a mining job in the city after all his sheep die from some sheep disease. Did I mention he’s epileptic? |
KURT COBAIN: ABOUT A SON (dir: AJ
Schnack, Not Rated) –
It’s pretty crazy that Kurt Cobain has been dead for 14 years. That’s longer than some people have been alive. Mostly little kids.
Anyhoo, check out this rad documentary about the slacker generation’s John Lennon. |
LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (dir: Craig Gillespie, PG-13) –
Ryan Gosling scores again… with his blow-up doll girlfriend. No, really. This movie is about a slightly delusional young man with a blow-up doll girlfriend. |
MANDA BALA (SEND A BULLET) (dir: Jason Kohn, Not Rated) –
This movie won the Grand Jury Prize for documentaries at Sundance and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a sprawling indictment of the corruption and the class struggle in Brazil. |
RETRIBUTION (dir: Kiyoshi Kurosawa, R) –
A police detective investigating a woman’s murder gets freaked out when all the clues he finds point to himself. Since this is a Japanese horror film, the real killer is probably the ghost of a laptop or something. |
WAR DANCE (dir: Sean Fine / Andrea Nix, PG-13) –
This documentary follows three young Ugandan children living in a displacement camp for war victims who dance away their troubles as they compete for a spot in the national music and dance festival. |
