NEW MOVIES!
FEBRUARY 12 - FEBRUARY 18, 2008
THE AMATEURS (dir: Michael
Traeger, R) – In an attempt to make some dough and impress their families, Jeff Bridges and Ted Danson decide to recruit folks around town for a homemade adult film. |
BECOMING JANE (dir: Julian
Jarrold, PG) – Anne Hathaway stars as young Jane Austen as she romances dashing James
McAvoy. Don’t let the fact that this is entirely fictitious bother you. |
BLONDE AMBITION (dir: Scott Marshall, PG-13) – Luke Wilson has a lot of explaining to do. |
BLUE STATE (dir: Marshall
Lewy, R) – After vowing to move to Canada if John Kerry lost the 2004 election, Breckin Meyer sets out to make good on his word, but just ends up on a wacky road trip. |
BROTHERS THREE (dir: Paul
Kampf, R) – After being summoned by their father to a remote cabin, three brothers realize they’ve got some serious family issues to work on. |
CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERHERO (dir: Matt
Ogens, R) – This documentary follows
four people who make their living dressed as superhero characters on Hollywood Boulevard. |
DEDICATION (dir: Justin Theroux, R) – Remember when you saw JESUS’ SON and you decided Billy Crudup was probably the most exciting young actor around? Well, now he’s doing movies with Mandy Moore. |
FAT GIRLS (dir: Ash Christian, R) – Two teenage misfits in
small town Texas decide to not care what the popular kids think and set out on a quest to find the perfect prom dates. |
FATAL CONTACT (dir: Dennis Law, Not Rated) – Straight from the Olympics to DVD comes Jacky Wu
Jing, who is already being hailed as the heir to Jet Li’s throne. |
GO WEST (dir: Ahmed
Imamovic, Not Rated) – Here’s a
lovers' quandary for the ages. Not only do these two have to deal with being gay in Yugoslavia, but one of them is a Muslim and one is a Serb. Oh, and the war just started. |
*GONE BABY GONE (dir: Ben Affleck, R) – How Ben Affleck turned in a powerhouse directorial debut we’ll never know. But with this thriller about two private eyes searching for a missing little girl in Boston, he has not only coaxed brilliant performances out of his brother Casey and Amy Ryan but he has redeemed himself for his many past sins. |
I COULD NEVER BE YOUR WOMAN (dir: Amy
Heckerling, PG-13) – This romantic comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a total cougar after young stud Paul Rudd is no worse than any other example of the genre. So why did this go straight to
DVD? |
INTRODUCING THE DWIGHTS (dir: Cherie
Nowlan, R) – Brenda Blethyn stars as an aging comedienne who doesn’t realize her big break is probably never going to come… and that she’s stifling her teenage son with her overbearing ways. |
KILLER PAD (dir: Robert
Englund, R) – No wonder that mansion was so affordable. It’s a direct portal to hell! |
KISSED BY WINTER (dir: Sara
Johnsen, Not Rated) – A woman running from her grief-stricken past finds love with a man who may be even more troubled than
she is in this stark Norwegian thriller. |
MARTIAN CHILD (dir: Menno
Meyjes, PG) – I don’t think John Cusack needs to be spending his time making squishy family comedies. |
NO RESERVATIONS (dir: Scott Hicks, PG) – If you loved the German food romance MOSTLY MARTHA, you’ll love it again now that it’s starring the more beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones. |
ROMANCE & CIGARETTES (dir: John
Turturro, R) – John Turturro had to distribute this himself after it was shelved by United Artists for 3 years. Do they really think that nobody would want to see a James
Gandolfini/Kate Winslet musical? |
VALLEY OF ANGELS (dir: Jon
Rosten, Not Rated) – Zeus, a recent transplant from Chicago, struggles to not get
caught up in the tempting criminal underworld of Los Angeles. |
WE OWN THE NIGHT (dir: James Gray, R) – Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix re-team with their THE YARDS director for this
1980s-set, gritty crime drama about brothers on opposite sides of the law. |
WHY DID I GET MARRIED? (dir: Tyler Perry, PG-13) – Four couples get together at a Rocky Mountain retreat for their annual get-together, but old grievances and romantic jealousies soon take over. |
^WOOL 100% (dir: Mai
Tominaga, Not Rated) – In this mind-bending Japanese fantasy, two old ladies discover a disturbed little girl in their home who begins knitting a red sweater and won’t stop. This mixture of live action, animation and puppetry is probably not for everyone, but fans of WE ARE THE STRANGE should definitely check it out. |
