NEW MOVIES!
JANUARY 29 - FEBRUARY 4, 2008
BORDERTOWN (dir: Gregory
Nava, R) – Jennifer Lopez plays a crafty reporter investigating a series of murders of young women in Juarez, Mexico but may end up putting herself directly in the killer’s path. |
CANVAS (dir: Joseph Greco, PG-13) – Marcia Gay Harden and Joe Pantoliano star in this well-reviewed drama about a woman suffering from schizophrenia and the inevitable impact it has on her husband and young son. |
THE COMEBACKS (dir: Tom Brady,
Unrated) – I feel like the spoof genre has already covered corny sports movies, but whatever. |
DADDY DAY CAMP (dir: Fred Savage, PG) – Just when you thought Cuba Gooding Jr. couldn’t embarrass himself any further. Cuba, you have an Academy Award. You must stop this nonsense. |
DARK BLUE ALMOST BLACK (dir: Daniel Sanchez
Arevalo, Not Rated) – In this Spanish film, Jorge, a young man who dutifully attends to his ailing father, tries to impregnate his sister-in-law for his infertile brother, and helps his best friend come to terms with his complicated sexuality. But what about Jorge, Jorge? |
FEEL THE NOISE (dir: Alejandro
Chomski, PG-13) – J. Lo also blesses us this week with her producing skills on this coming-of-age drama about an aspiring rapper from the Bronx who has to hide out in Puerto Rico for a while to avoid some thugs. Conveniently, this affords him the opportunity to get to know his estranged father. |
I AM AN ANIMAL: THE STORY OF INGRID NEWKIRK & PETA (dir: Matthew
Galkin, Not Rated) - Journey into the slightly wacky world of Ingrid Newkirk, the co-founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Where many critics see a zealot/terrorist unable to comprehend the idea of a food chain, others see a woman overflowing with compassion who only wants justice for all living things. This fascinating documentary from HBO may prove that the truth lies somewhere in between. |
THE INVASION (dir: Oliver
Hirschbiegel, PG-13) – Nicole “Impervious to Flops” Kidman stars in her latest dose of box office poison, a redundant and unnecessary update of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS which adds insult to injury by wasting the talents of Daniel Craig as well. |
IRA AND ABBY (dir: Robert Cary, R) – Two mismatched New Yorkers meet, fall in love and quickly get married. They just as quickly realize they’re entirely wrong for one another and comically try to abort the relationship. |
KING OF CALIFORNIA (dir: Mike Cahill, PG-13) – Michael Douglas, upon being released from a mental hospital and reuniting with his wary teenage daughter Evan Rachel Wood, quickly gets to work on digging up some Spanish treasure that he believes is buried beneath a Costco. |
*THE KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS (dir: Seth Gordon, PG-13) – Hopefully this strangely moving documentary about dueling Donkey Kong World Champions will inspire a spate of classic video game-themed movies, the same way SPELLBOUND made spelling bees a short-lived cinematic craze. |
LADRON QUE ROBA A LADRON (dir: Joe
Menendez, PG-13) – Two thieves unite to steal from a big-time criminal who has been exploiting poor immigrants. When their criminal associates are too afraid to help them with the heist, they recruit the poor immigrants. |
MOVING MCALLISTER (dir: Andrew Black, PG-13) – A luckless young man, four days before he’s supposed to take the bar exam, ends up on a road trip with that NAPOLEON DYNAMITE kid and Rutger
Hauer. |
MR. UNTOUCHABLE (dir: Marc Levin, R) – This documentary recounts the glamorous and dangerous life of Nicky Barnes, the man who controlled all the heroin in New York in the 1970s. It features interviews with the man himself, who has been in hiding since 1986 and was presumed dead. |
THE NINES (dir: John August, R) – Who’s up for some pseudo-religious weirdness involving video games and Ryan Reynolds’ rock-hard
pecs? |
RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR (dir: Chris
Gorak, R) – Rory Cochrane and Mary McCormack play a young couple thrust into chaos after a dirty bomb goes off in downtown Los Angeles. |
^ROCKET SCIENCE (dir: Jeffrey Blitz, R) – This movie really wants you to believe that it’s NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, THUMBSUCKER and JUNO all wrapped up in an adorably awkward while cleverly written package. |
TRADE (dir: Marco
Kreuzpaintner, R) – Who’s gonna save young girls from sexual enslavement in Mexico? Kevin Kline, that’s who! |
WHITE RAINBOW (dir: Dharan
Mandrayar, PG-13) – And to top off this week full of exploited and abused females is this searing drama from India about four women who take a spiritual journey to shake off society’s shackles. |
