NEW MOVIES!  JANUARY 10 - JANUARY 16, 2017

THE ACCOUNTANT (USA, R) - Ben Affleck is an autistic accountant for the mob with Special Ops training! If you can swallow that concept, maybe you'll enjoy this "smart" blow-em-up action drama thriller that wants to be the next BOURNE IDENTITY.
DIRECTED BY: Gavin O'Connor
STARRING: Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J. K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, Jean Smart
METASCORE: 51, based on 45 Critics
*DEEPWATER HORIZON (USA, PG-13) - I was a little apprehensive about this movie taking history's worst environmental disaster and turning it into an exciting thrill-ride. Apparently, it does just that, but it also really villainizes BP, so that's something.
DIRECTED BY: Peter Berg
STARRING: Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien, Kate Hudson
METASCORE: 68, based on 52 Critics
THE BIRTH OF A NATION (USA, R) - This movie is about a slave named Nat Turner who could read and preach. The man didn't take injustice lying down either and so he formed an uprising. Some disturbing events in director/star Nate Parker's past overshadowed the reception of this movie, but did you know he grew up in Bath, Maine?
DIRECTED BY: Nate Parker
STARRING: Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union
METASCORE: 69, based on 49 Critics
KEVIN HART: WHAT NOW? (USA, R) - This is a comedic documentary about Kevin Hart. You get to see his Philly performance in front of 50,000 people. There's also some kind of wraparound story where Kevin gets to pretend he's James Bond or something.
DIRECTED BY: Leslie Small / Tim Story
STARRING: Kevin Hart, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, David Meunier, Ed Helms
METASCORE: 60, based on 22 Critics
MAX STEEL (USA, PG-13) - This is the story of a teenager named Max and his alien bro named Steel. Together the two form Max Steel which is some kinda power ranger transformer. I guess.
DIRECTED BY: Stewart Hendler
STARRING: Ben Winchell, Josh Brener, Ana Villafañe, Andy García, Maria Bello, Billy Slaughter
METASCORE: 22, based on 7 Critics
^UNDER THE SHADOW (Iran, PG-13) - This is a horror movie about a mother and daughter trying to get by in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War. They are doing okay, but then a strange presence starts haunting their house and things get a bit spooky.
DIRECTED BY: Babak Anvari
STARRING: Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi, Bobby Naderi, Ray Haratian, Arash Marandi
METASCORE: 84, based on 20 Critics
THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER (Germany, R) - Here's a thrilling biographical drama about a man who brought a Nazi general to justice. If you like seeing lawyers stick it to Nazis in a court of law, then this is your next date night flick.
DIRECTED BY: Lars Kraume
STARRING: Burghart Klaußner, Ronald Zehrfeld, Jörg Schüttauf, Sebastian Blomberg
METASCORE: 61, based on 14 Critics
AS I OPEN MY EYES (Tunisia, Not Rated) - 18-year-old Farrah has just graduated and her family has big plans for her to become a doctor. However, she lives in Tunisia and a revolution is brewing. She'd really prefer to sing in a political punk band and not worry about how her behavior bothers her mother and her neighbors.
DIRECTED BY: Leyla Bouzid
STARRING: Baya Medhaffar, Ghalia Benali, Montassar Ayari
METASCORE: 74, based on 11 Critics
BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS (USA, Not Rated) - This documentary is about a young blind woman. She's kinda risqué, so she gets entangled in a sex-positive community in her hometown in rural Maine. But you'll have to watch the movie to find out where exactly that community is.
DIRECTED BY: Garrett Zevgetis
METASCORE: 56, based on 8 Critics
